Reliquiary (theca)


Italy 15th century Gilt silver, enamel, mother-of-pearl, casting, embossing, carving out, engraving; diameter 8.8 cm A round reliquary consisting of two parts. The edges are filled with floral and zoomorphic motifs. On one side on a blue enamel background the Crucifixion with figures of Mary and John standing next to the cross, and on the other side a relief in mother-of-pearl showing a kneeling St Catherine of Sienna. The reliquary came from the cathedral at Grobnik. Restored in 1994 and 1995 by Maja Velicogna Novoselac.
