Fragment of an inscribed lintel

    picture-1

    Susedgrad
    late 15th century
    Lithotamnic lime-stone
    10 x 30 x 17 cm

The profiled fragment of a stone lintel with the inscription ITAT was discovered in 1944 during the archaeological excavations of the first room of the southern tract of the outer castle. Only three letters of the inscription, TAT, are clearly visible, while the letter 'I' is only partially preserved. The inscription was made in relief capital letters, and each letter has a characteristic decorative tail. Two other fragments were also excavated with this one, so that it was possible to read the inscription. Unfortunately, the two other fragments are missing today. The inscription on the lintel had read as follows: (VAN)ITAS (VAN)ITAT(ATV)M ET OM(NIA VANITAS).

The fragment was donated to the HPM in 1994.

Documentation regarding the archaeological excavations at Susedgrad in 1944 and 1945 is kept at the State Administration for the Protection of the Cultural and Natural Heritage, Zagreb, Ilica 44. The excavations were headed by Professor T. Stahuljak.
