Ilok, the Franciscan Church of St Mary, today the Church of St John of Capistrano
14th century
Sandy limestone, carved
51 x 38 cm
This monument belongs to a group of consoles decorated with a human figure. The sitting figure holding up a coffin lid with his arm is depicted in deep relief. The right side of the console is decorated with three rows of leaves, and leaves also cover the breast and the right hand side of the human figure. Some authors attribute the capital to Parler's workshop. Since this workshop was active at the end of the 14th to the beginning of the 15th century, the capitals could be dated to the first half of the 15th century. By drawing analogies to similar capitals in the continental part of Croatia, we date the Ilok capitals to the 14th century.
Donated by the Franciscan monastery in Ilok in 1912, after the church of St John of Capistrano was remodelled in 1906.
